RSHE for SEND pupils

Health

The specific needs of SEND pupils are in terms of:

  • understanding the distinction between private and public space; and
  • understanding the need for personal hygiene, particularly at puberty.

Relationships

SEND pupils may be the group that is most at risk, both of becoming victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse. For some children the challenge of thinking about and caring for others is greater than for others. Therefore, more time and explicit learning strategies that acknowledge and address these obstacles will have to be considered.

Further resources

Scotland’s Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood Education programme offers excellent guidance for materials for SEND pupils, including links to helpful materials such as the animations at BBC’s PSHE for SEN and Materials for Deaf Young People, and materials for children and young people on the autism spectrum.
